Now I’ll let you all in on a little secret. Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. What’s better is when it’s enjoyed after a nice long weekend sleep in. That’s when it is so good that we give it a special name in honour of it’s tardiness; BRUNCH! Also this event can be the best way of kick-starting the day following the revelries of the previous night; a strong coffee or if the situation is dire, a Bloody Mary.
Fortunately on the Saturday morning we visited Hawker Street Café, our situation wasn’t dire, which was lucky as I don’t think Hawker Street is licensed. Coffees were all we needed to get us into gear for the day ahead. And what a coffee! Hawker Street sure knows how to get this right; perfect strength, temperature and flavour mmmm. I had one of my sinful veggie brunch favourites; Eggs Florentine. The (free range) eggs were soft and runny on a bed of perfectly wilted spinach, which was obviously fresh rather than frozen. The only drawback was that the hollandaise sauce (the pièce de résistance) was apparently not home made. This was a shame, however it still was a lovely breakfast.
There were other gorgeous veggie options on the menu including zucchini and corn fritters served with a salsa, baked eggs cooked in a vegetable and tomato sugo, ricotta pancakes, and waffles. It was a fantastic menu with some great veggie options. Gluten free bread was also available. Hawker Street Café even makes it’s own breakfast (baked) beans, which are definitely worth a try as a protein rich option.
Hawker Street Café had a great vibe with friendly staff who knew their stuff and offered good service. Tucked away on a quiet suburban street in Bowden was a very busy little café, which is a testament to the quality of this gem. So if you’re really keen, make a booking! There is even a lovely little vintage store a few doors down for those interested in some post-breakfast shopping.
